Orthodontic treatment in Lake Zurich is an exciting time for patients transforming their smiles. However, when wearing braces, it is important to realize that the plaque and food particles, leading to cavities, now have additional nooks and crannies for accumulation. Thus, patients need to learn how to clean their braces properly by adjusting their brushing and flossing habits as needed. By following proper oral hygiene procedures, patients will be able to avoid serious oral health issues that could potentially complicate their orthodontic treatment. Below is a brief outline of the best practices to follow for brushing and flossing with braces in Lake Zurich.

Brushing with Braces

The first step is to take out any removable parts of the braces, such as rubber bands or elastics. Once they are out of the way, the wires and pins of the braces can be thoroughly cleaned. When brushing the wires, it is best to move from top to bottom while working around the teeth. Brushing for at least two minutes at least twice daily is always recommended – with braces in place brushing more frequently might be advised by your orthodontist. Once brushing is complete, the last step is to thoroughly rinse the mouth and check the braces for any remaining food particles before carefully putting rubber bands or other removable appliances back in place.

Flossing with Braces

While flossing with braces can be somewhat difficult, it can be done if the right steps are carefully followed. A waxed floss is recommended, as an unwaxed floss is more likely to be caught in the brackets and wires. The floss needs to be carefully threaded under the main wire, then guided between the two teeth being cleaned. After gently moving it up and down, the patient can remove the floss and repeat the process with the next set of teeth. If this process proves difficult, it may help to use a floss threader to guide the floss above and below the orthodontic wire. It is essential to make sure that enough floss (ideally around 18 inches) is being used for each session. Gentle movements are recommended to avoid snapping the floss.

How to Take Care of a Child’s Braces

Parents may need to do the flossing for younger children who are unable to thread the floss under the braces by themselves. As for brushing, they should monitor them to make sure that they are taking out rubber bands and other removable parts before beginning. Parental oversight can also help ensure that children do not forget to put the removable parts back at the end of their treatments. An orthodontist in Lake Zurich can go over additional steps that parents can take to help their children.

It is important to always be aware of the best oral hygiene practices, especially if one is in the middle of an orthodontic treatment. If a patient has any doubts about their ability to keep their teeth and braces clean, they should get in touch with their orthodontist right away.
